UAE Visa Rules April 2026: What Changed and How to Avoid the New Fines
Author: TripUAE Team (Grinlo Tourism LLC, Dubai) Date: April 29, 2026 Category: Entry & Documentation
TL;DR
In April 2026, the UAE tightened entry rules and overstay penalties. The biggest change: the 10-day overstay grace period has been removed — you now pay AED 50 per day from day one of overstay. At passport control, officers may request Proof of Maintenance (return ticket + accommodation booking). Visa-free entry for most nationalities (90 days) still works, but you must have documents ready. A new 5-year self-sponsored multi-entry visa is now available for frequent visitors. This article covers every change point-by-point so you can plan around the new rules.
At a Glance
| Change | Before | Now (April 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Overstay grace period | 10 days fine-free | 0 days — fines start day 1 |
| Daily overstay fine | AED 100 | AED 50/day (compounding) |
| Entry documents | Passport + visa/stamp | + Proof of Maintenance (ticket + hotel) |
| Long-stay visa options | 1, 2, 5, 10 years (Golden) | + 5-year self-sponsored |
| Visa categories | Tourism, business, transit | + 4 new (AI / Entertainment / Event / Maritime) |
1. Visa-Free Entry — Still Works, but Stricter
Citizens of 80+ countries (including the US, UK, EU, Russia, Kazakhstan, Australia, most of CIS) can enter the UAE visa-free with a 90-day stamp on arrival. This has not been removed.
But now:
- The stamp is granted contingent on having a return ticket and accommodation booking. Without these, entry can be refused.
- The 90-day clock starts at entry — if you've been in the UAE 89 days, you must leave; you cannot extend a second time without exiting.
- If you overstay, the AED 50/day fine starts on day one. The previous 10-day grace period is gone.
TripUAE tip: If you plan to stay more than 60 days, get a tourist visa in advance. For 7–14-day stays under the visa-free stamp, you'll be fine — just keep your return ticket (printed or on phone) and hotel booking ready.
2. Proof of Maintenance — What It Is
From April 2026, UAE passport control officers can request Proof of Maintenance — evidence that you can support yourself during the trip and leave on time.
What to have ready (if asked):
- Return air ticket with a fixed date within 90 days. Electronic ticket on phone or printed.
- Accommodation proof: hotel booking covering your stay (or at least the first 3–5 nights), invitation from a UAE resident, or apartment rental contract.
- Funds — credit/debit card or cash. No fixed minimum yet, but USD 300/day equivalent is the practical guideline.
How often is it actually checked?
In practice (April 2026 observations), about 1 in 5–6 tourists is asked. Solo travelers and those without an accommodation booking are checked more often. Tourists with prearranged tours or full hotel bookings are rarely questioned.
TripUAE tip: If you've booked excursions or transfers with us, we issue an official confirmation under Grinlo Tourism LLC. This counts as part of your Proof of Maintenance — just message your manager.
3. The New AED 50/Day Overstay Fine
This is the most consequential change for tourists. Before April 2026, the UAE granted a 10-day grace period — overstay within 10 days carried no fine; you just had to leave.
Now:
- Day 1 past expiry — AED 50
- Day 7 — AED 350
- Day 30 — AED 1,500
- Day 60 — AED 3,000 plus deportation and re-entry ban risk
If you overstay:
- Pay the fine at the airport terminal before departure (card or AED cash).
- Never go off-grid — every additional day compounds the fine.
- After 60 days, automatic deportation and re-entry ban apply — restoring status later is expensive.
4. New 5-Year Multi-Entry Visa for Self-Sponsored Tourists
April 2026 introduced a 5-year multi-entry visa without requiring a UAE sponsor (no host resident or employer needed).
Conditions:
- Up to 90 days per single entry
- Up to 180 days total per calendar year
- Available for tourists from 150+ countries
- Cost: AED 650 (~USD 175) government fee + service charge
- Documents: passport (6+ months validity), photo, bank statement (USD 4,000+), travel insurance
Best for:
- Frequent UAE visitors (3+ trips/year)
- Remote workers spending part of the year in the UAE
- Business travelers with regular meetings
- Families with multiple holidays per year
Don't confuse with the Golden Visa — that's a 10-year residency for investors, top specialists, and special-talent holders. Requirements are stricter (AED 2M+ investment or verified qualification).
5. Four New Visa Categories
April 2026 also introduced four specialized short-stay visas (up to 90 days):
- AI Specialist Visit Visa — for AI/ML/data-science professionals. Requires qualification proof, UAE-company invitation, or AI conference participation.
- Entertainment Visa — for actors, musicians, performers arriving for shoots or performances. Sponsored through a UAE agency.
- Event Visa — for participants and organizers of major events (Expo, Art Dubai, GITEX, Cityscape). Registered through a UAE event partner.
- Maritime Visa — for yacht, private vessel, and cruise crew members. Registered via marina or cruise operator.
For ordinary tourists (vacation, shopping, excursions), nothing changes — visa-free or tourist visa still applies.
6. Airport Checklist
Before flying to the UAE:
- Passport with 6+ months validity from entry date
- Printed return ticket
- Hotel booking (full stay or at least the first 3–5 nights)
- Travel insurance (technically optional, strongly recommended — UAE healthcare is expensive)
- Excursion booking confirmation if applicable
- Working Visa/Mastercard (Russian-issued cards including MIR don't work — use cards from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Armenia, or your home country)
At passport control in Dubai (DXB/DWC) or Abu Dhabi (AUH):
- Use the "Visit Visa" or "GCC Citizens" line — visa-free travelers go to the green-lit "Tourist" desk.
- Hand over your passport. If asked, show your hotel booking and return ticket (phone screen or printout works).
- Receive your stamp with the exit date. Photograph it — it's your only document confirming your authorized stay duration.

What is Proof of Maintenance?
A document set proving you can support yourself in the UAE and leave on time: return ticket, accommodation booking, debit/credit card or cash. Requested selectively at passport control from April 2026.
What is the UAE overstay fine in 2026?
From April 2026, the fine is AED 50 (~USD 14) per day starting from the first day of overstay. The previous 10-day grace period has been removed. After 60 days, deportation and re-entry ban apply.
