Most visitors to Dubai never leave the city limits. They see the skyscrapers, the malls, the desert — and fly home thinking that is all the UAE has to offer. Ras Al Khaimah proves them wrong.
Located about 100 kilometers northeast of Dubai (roughly a 1.5-hour drive), Ras Al Khaimah — or RAK, as everyone calls it — is the UAE's adventure emirate. Instead of glass towers, you get the Hajar Mountains. Instead of artificial islands, you get natural hot springs and ancient forts. And instead of the polished tourist routine, you get something that feels more raw and real.
A day trip from Dubai to RAK is doable, affordable, and one of the best things you can do if you want to see a completely different side of the country.
Getting There From Dubai
By car: Take the E311 highway north. The drive from Dubai Marina or Downtown Dubai takes about 1.5 hours with normal traffic. Road signs are in English and Arabic. The highway is well-maintained and fast.
By tour: We offer guided day trips to Ras Al Khaimah with hotel pickup in Dubai, air-conditioned transport, and a guide. This is the easiest option if you do not want to rent a car or navigate unfamiliar mountain roads.
By public transport: Possible but slow. Buses run from Dubai to RAK bus station, but getting from the bus station to the mountain attractions requires a taxi or rental car.
Top Things to Do in Ras Al Khaimah
1. Jebel Jais — The UAE's Highest Mountain
Jebel Jais stands at 1,934 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in the entire UAE. A smooth, winding mountain road takes you to the top, with viewing platforms at multiple points along the way.
The drive up is an experience in itself. The landscape changes dramatically as you climb — from flat desert at the base to rugged, layered rock formations that look more like Oman or southern Spain than what you would expect from the UAE.
At the top, the air is noticeably cooler (up to 10 degrees Celsius lower than Dubai), and the panoramic views stretch across the Hajar Mountains and into Oman.
Tip: Bring a jacket, even in summer. The wind at the summit is strong and temperatures at the peak can dip below 20 degrees Celsius when Dubai is sitting at 40.
2. Jais Flight — The World's Longest Zipline
If you are looking for an adrenaline rush, Jais Flight delivers. Certified by Guinness World Records as the world's longest zipline, it sends you flying 2.83 kilometers across Jebel Jais at speeds up to 150 km/h.
You are harnessed in a Superman-style (face-down) position and launched from a platform at 1,680 meters above sea level. The flight lasts about 2 to 3 minutes, with mountain peaks on both sides and a canyon below.
Age requirement: Minimum 12 years, minimum weight 45 kg, maximum weight 150 kg. Booking: Book online in advance. Slots fill up, especially on weekends and during cooler months.
3. Jais Sledder — A Mountain Toboggan
A newer addition to Jebel Jais, the Jais Sledder is a toboggan ride that winds 1,885 meters down the mountainside on a steel track. You control your speed with a hand brake. It is family-friendly (children aged 3 and up can ride with an adult) and does not require any special equipment or fitness level.
The views during the ride are excellent, and the experience is genuinely fun for all ages.
4. Khatt Hot Springs
At the base of the Hajar Mountains, natural hot springs bubble up through the rock. The water is mineral-rich and warm, and locals have used these springs for centuries. The area has been developed with pools and seating areas, making it easy to visit.
It is a calm, low-key stop that pairs well with the more intense mountain activities. Soak for 30 to 45 minutes, then continue your day.
5. Dhayah Fort
The only hilltop fort in the UAE, Dhayah Fort dates back to the 16th century and sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking date palm groves and the surrounding valley. The climb to the top takes about 10 minutes and rewards you with 360-degree views of the RAK countryside and coastline.
The fort was the site of a significant battle during the British campaign of 1819. A small exhibit at the base provides historical context.
Entry: Free.
6. RAK National Museum
Located in the old ruling family's palace in RAK City, this small museum covers the emirate's history from ancient times through the pearl-diving era and into the modern period. Archaeological finds from nearby Shimal (dating back 5,000 years) are displayed here.
The museum is compact and can be toured in 30 to 45 minutes. It provides good context for the forts and ruins you will see elsewhere in the emirate.
Entry: Very affordable, just a few dirhams.
7. Suwaidi Pearl Farm
The UAE's only pearl farm offers guided tours where you learn about the country's pearl-diving heritage, see how pearls are cultivated today, and take a boat ride through the mangroves. You can even open an oyster and keep the pearl.
It is a unique, culturally rich experience that you will not find in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
8. Al Marjan Island Beaches
If you want to end your day trip with some beach time, Al Marjan Island is RAK's waterfront development with hotels, restaurants, and public beach access. The water is calm, the sand is clean, and it is significantly less crowded than any Dubai beach.

Practical Tips
Best season: October through April. Summer temperatures in RAK are similar to Dubai (40+ degrees Celsius), but the mountain top is cooler year-round.
What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes, a jacket for Jebel Jais, sunscreen, water, and your camera. If visiting the hot springs, bring swimwear and a towel.
Driving: The mountain road is well-paved and safe, but has sharp curves. Drive slowly and stay in your lane. If you are not comfortable with mountain driving, book a guided tour.
Food: RAK has excellent, affordable restaurants. Skip the hotel restaurants and eat where locals eat. Emirati rice dishes, fresh fish, and shawarma are standouts.
Combine with Oman: The Omani border is very close to RAK. With advance visa arrangements, you could cross into Musandam (Oman) for a dhow cruise and return the same day. We offer Oman Musandam day trips at $80/adult and $70/child.
Why Ras Al Khaimah Is Worth the Trip
Dubai is incredible, but after three or four days of skyscrapers and malls, the mountains of RAK feel like a reset button. The landscape is different, the pace is slower, the history is older, and the prices are lower.
If you have a spare day in your Dubai itinerary, do not fill it with another mall visit. Drive north. You will come back with a completely different impression of what the UAE is.
